Hi

This page is for students of Aboriginal Studies at Armidale High School. You are encouraged to use this page in your own time for study and revision of topics covered in class. I will be putting revision questions here for you to answer, sample HSC questions, source materials and anything that may help you when you are not in class. That means that if you are sick, or at TAFE for the day (yes Joel, that means you!) you don't miss out on essential work. It also means that any student who wants to move ahead and look deeper into the subject can do so 24 hours a day, seven days a week if you choose to do so. (that's all of you!)

Here are a few starter revision questions for you to do. If you like you can send the answers to me at dylan.worley@education.nsw.gov.au and I will mark and comment on them for you. With this website you can do your HSC work whether you (or even me!)can make it to school or not. Good luck. Mr. Worley.

1. What were the two questions asked of Australians in the 1967 referendum? How did most people vote?

2. Write a definition of racism in your own words. How does it differ from ethnocentrism?

3. What are the three legal requirements for someone to be Aboriginal?

4. Who was Eddie Mabo? What victory did he achieve in Australia's High Court?

Answer these questions in writing. You may use reference book or websites for the answers, but remember, everything (except for direct quotes) must be in your own words. 27.8.07

OK, here are some more questions for you to research... Look at the text called "Historyzone 2" pages 190 & 191. How did the Aboriginal Tent Embassy begin? Find information in other texts (e.g. Retro 2") and make up your mind whether the Tent Embassy was a good idea or not. Write your opinion.

Next, In Historyzone 2, look at page 193. What does FCAATSI stand for? Read and memorise their list of demands. Which obnes were the most important. Knowing what has happened since then, re-arrange their list in what you think SHOULD have been their demand, from 1 to 5, with 1 being the most important. Justify your arrangement. 30.8.07  Text books are available for borrowing from the Learning Centre, they can be used in study periods or at home. Remember, "There is no such thing as a "free" period - these periods are for studying school subjects, not the contents of a  Macca hamburger.

For your exam you will need to be familiar with the following words & phrases;

* management practices * customary law * terra nullius * native title * sovereignty * consequences * relationships * spirituality * belief systems * influences * strategies * social systems * quantitative research methodologies ( such as surveys, structured interviews, observation, statistical analysis and focus groups.)

Our international group study is the Nez Perce tribe of the USA. You will need to know about their history, famous tribal members (e.g. Chief Joseph) and what happened when Europeans arrived. Two people who had a lot of contact with the Nez Perce were Lewis & Clark, explorers who travelled from east to west across the USA. The Nez Perce and other tribes helped Lewis & Clark a lot. (They also appear as an exhibit in the movie "Night at the Museum")

Look up Lewis & Clark's journals and read about their contact with the Nez Perce.

Memorise details of protection, assimilation, integration and then self determination.

What was the Tent Embassy set up for? When was this? What was the government and police response at the time?

Who were the organisers of the Aboriginal Day of Mourning in 1938? What was this day about?
